Carrieton seems like a leftover from the heady days of the 1870s when settlers thought they could push as far north as they wished in South Australia, on the premise that the 'rain follows the plough'. It was an illusion. Today Carrieton is a town of fifty people, serving local pastoralists and the passing tourist trade. It was named by Governor Jervois after his daughter Caroline in 1879.
