Freeling - Lower North Region, South Australia.

Freeling, named after a former Surveyor-General of South Australia, lies a few kilometres off the main road to Kapunda. I found it a pleasant surprise. It appears to be quite flourishing. In winter it is set in a sea of green with a view over the wetlands to the Mt Lofty Ranges. The town is well preserved and has some fine domestic architecture as well as attractive churches and public buildings.

The town is close enough to Adelaide that metropolitan workers can easily live in Freeling and commute, at least to the northern side of the city. I noticed quite a few new houses.

The uninformed visitor may be puzzled by the prevalence of signs on buildings proclaiming a connection to Gungellen rather than Freeling. Gungellen is the fictional town in the TV series McLeod's Daughters.

Perhaps it is the influx of commuters, a TV production company and curious tourists, but Freeling seemed remarkably busy and prosperous, even on the Sunday afternoon in winter when I went there.
