Mount Barker - Adelaide Hills, South Australia.

Is Mount Barker today city, country or perhaps a bit of both? In any case it was founded in controversy in 1840 - there were allegations of official corruption in determining the initial land claim. After acting as a centre for the rich farm and grazing land in the vicinity since 1840, Mt Barker seems to have become more and more an outlying suburb of Adelaide, its accessibility greatly enhanced by a modern freeway.

Its success as a nineteenth century settlement is evidenced by the many fine Victorian buildings which remain. However the town has been overrun by the imposition of modern development and it can be a frustrating experience trying to photograph what you know is a fine building at heart but one overlaid by modern adornments, alterations or advertising signs !
