Orroroo - Upper North Region, South Australia.

The meaning of the name is subject to controversy. This farming community was founded in 1875.

Some of the smaller South Australian country towns have faded away over the years but Orroroo is full of life. The main street, with a fine arcade of street trees, provides a pleasant setting for outside eating. The town boasts numerous Victorian homes and buildings as well as a genuine "settler's cottage".

The view from Tank Hill is splendid. If you approach from the east, Orroroo makes a fine gateway to the Southern Flinders Ranges, offering springtime views over the green fields towards the dark blue of the mountains. The town could probably make better use of the recreational opportunities offered by its old reservoir, where water birds and other species love to gather.
