St Catherine's Roman Catholic Church (1925), Pekina, Upper North Region, South Australia

Pekina is a fascinating hamlet on the road south from Orroroo. It was settled by Irish migrants and is said to be unique in South Australia in having no churches other than the Roman Catholic. What's more, St Catherine's was once a cathedral church. The Bishop and three priests once lived in the presbytery. Bishop Maher appears to be buried in the grounds. The memorial is just visible behind a tree.

Pekina must once have been a very flourishing town but no one was around the day we went there. The only living creature that took any notice of me was a magpie that insisted on swooping as I walked too close to her nest.
